Ghost Cult Magazine Review Roundup – Nov ’23.

Hello, it has been a while. Life has got rather busy this year, what with a new job and the birth of my daughter so this has taken a bit of a back seat. I will be updating as frequently as possible, when time and sleep allow. You know the drill, click the links to read more.

Yes – Mirror To The Sky

MTTS is the 23rd album from the prog rock stalwarts Yes and it continues where its 2021 predecessor The Quest left off by offering up well made and slickly produced prog. It is full of the fantastical lyrics, punchy bass lines, intricate instrumentation and bombast that fans of the band will love.

Rival Sons – Darkfighter

The first of two new albums this year from Californian rock n rollers Rival Sons, Darkfighter is a short, sharp and richly produced eight track display of their ‘70s inspired Rock. It follows on nicely from 2019’s Feral Roots, with songs like the title track, ‘Nobody Wants to Die’ and ‘Bird in the Hand’ sure to please fans of The Black Keys, Free and Led Zeppelin.

Electric Boys – Grand Explosivos

These American sounding Swedes Electric Boys, who had some MTV fuelled success in the late ‘80s and early 90s, are back with Grand Explosivos. Swagger, big riffs, sizable hooks and dashings of their trademark funk help make this a happy go lucky serving of Classic Rock that is not groundbreaking, but is fun.

She Burns Red – Out Of Darkness

Out Of Darkness is the promising debut from Scottish Rockers She Burns Red. It is emotive, alternative influenced hard rock that mixes grunge like introspection and metal heaviness to Foo Fighters and Wildhearts-esque pop sensibilities. An accomplished record from a new band.

Rival Sons – Lightbringer

The sequel to the aforementioned Darkfighter, Lightbringer is a richly layered album that mixes the punchy Rock n Roll of its predecessor with lighter acoustic and folk elements to great results. The only real problem is that it is just six tracks long.

The Struts – Pretty Vicious

Instantaneous and a lot of fun, Pretty Vicious is the fourth LP by English glam rock outfit The Struts. Their sound is an amalgam of The Darkness, The Rolling Stones and Queen and definitely worth your time.
