Here are the latest bunch of songs, new and old, that have recently caught my attention.
The Ides of March – ‘Vehicle‘
First up is an oldie I heard on Radio Caroline. A stone cold classic from 1970 that has somehow passed me by, with an irresistible horn section, a huge chorus and bundles of swagger. Written by Jim Peterik about a girl he was infatuated with who he thought only liked him for his car, it is a belter. Ultimately Ides of March were one hit wonders but Jim wrote many others including ‘Caught Up In You’ (.38 Special), ‘Burning Heart’ and ‘Eye of the Tiger’ (Survivor).
Iron Maiden – ‘The Writing on the Wall’
A single from their 17th and upcoming album Senjutsu, due for release September 3rd. Written by Adrian Smith and Bruce Dickinson, the 6 minute plus track sports a jaunty, Celtic sounding riff and an epic animated music video inspired by Rammstein’s brilliant ‘Deutschland’ vid. New Iron Maiden music does not happen often, their last album Book of Souls came out six years ago.
Biffy Clyro – ‘Holier Than Thou’
Scottish rockers Biffy Clyro’s wonderfully weird and creepy reimagining of Metallica’s hard hitting original is part of The Metallica Blacklist – a deluxe edition of the Black Album in celebration of its 30th anniversary. On it is a smorgasbord of artists covering tracks from the record, including Ghost, IDLES, Miley Cyrus and Elton John, Weezer, Volbeat and many many more.
Joe Bonamassa – ‘Notches’
The restless American blues maestro is at it again, releasing this from his yet untitled upcoming new album – his previous one being 2020s Royal Tea. Produced – as always – by Kevin Shirley and co-written by Blackberry Smoke’s Charlie Starr, ‘Notches’ is a driving rocker with some expectedly tasty guitar work and a chorus full of massive hooks.
David Lee Roth – ‘Giddy Up’
Ex Van Halen frontman Diamond Dave has dropped a new track, written alongside Rob Zombie guitarist John 5. Originally released last November alongside his 17 chapter online comic entitled ‘The Roth Project’, it is a bouncy pop rocker with a sense of joy and plenty of charm. The first single from this project’s soundtrack was ‘Somewhere Over the Bar and Grill’, which was dedicated to Eddie Van Halen.
The Wildhearts – ‘Sort Your Fucking Shit Out’
A fiery slice of punk with a radio friendly title, ‘Sort Your Fucking Shit Out’ is a snappy single from their upcoming record 21st Century Love Songs, their tenth album due out September 3rd. This raucous rallying cry to stop self destructive habits and sort your life out is hopefully a taster of things to come, especially after their top notch album The Renaissance Men in 2019.
