The Playlist Vol. 8

Here is a collection of songs, mostly new and some old, that have tickled my pickle recently – enjoy.

Bryan Adams – War Machine.

A few songs aside, ‘Run To You’ and guilty pleasure ‘I Need Somebody’, I am not a big fan of the Canadian rocker. His music is too beige and painstakingly made for mass appeal, like the Ed Sheeran or Nickelback of his day. I keep hearing this newly released track on Planet Rock and I dont mind it – its sounds like a punchy, old school Kiss track. After some digging it turns out it is an old Kiss track, co-written by Bryan Adams, Jim Vallance and Gene Simmons for their 1982 album Creatures of the Night

Goodbye June – Riding Through.

A riffy serving of short, sweet and soulful southern rock by Nashville trio Goodbye June. This single is from their latest record Deep in the Trouble, an unfussy collection of head bopping rootsy rock.

Blossoms – Gary.

A wonderfully jolly pop song from Manchester based indie rockers Blossoms, ‘Gary’ is based on the story of an 8ft tall gorilla statue that was stolen from a garden centre in Scotland, and it is insanely catchy to boot. Plus the music video has Sean Dyche and Rick Astley in it, what more could you ask for.

Black Label Society – The Gallows.

The latest dose of Black Sabbath influenced metal from American metal band Black Label Society, this one has a powerful groove and a nice ‘n burly riff.

Soul Asylum – The Only Thing I’m Missing.

Those chaps behind the massive 90s hit ‘Runaway Train’ are still at it and have just released their 13th record Slowly but Shirley. I know next to nothing about the band outside that popular ballad, but this is surprisingly rocking – coming across as a lively mix of Pearl Jam and Reef. The funky ‘Tryin’ Man’ is also worth a blast.

Genesis – Jesus He Knows Me

Now to end on an oldie I heard on the radio recently. This cheesy pop hit is from their 1991 album We Cant Dance and it is pointless resisting its insidiously catchy charms. Also, Ghost have done a rather good cover of it.
