Posted by The straight to Prime disaster film Greenland took everyone by surprise in 2020 by not being awful, so Amazon and director Ric Roman Waugh striked whilst the iron was hot and released the sequel a mere six years later. Greenland 2: Migration is set five years after the first one, and sees the Garrity family, government officials and others try to survive the fallout from a bunker in Greenland.
Life goes on for the survivors, with glimpses of joy in between the stark realities of survival. When disaster befalls their bunker, chaos ensues and they embark on a globe hopping quest to find a new, hospitable haven that is green and not beset with radiation. This is a more low key affair, with the focus being on one family’s journey to safety with all manner of explosions, storms, brawls and gun fights going off around then.
Whilst there is still big screen spectacle, the scene where they are crossing the English Channel is particularly hair raising, the focus is more on the Garrity’s fight for survival. It plays out like War of the Worlds, we see the family and the father and son relationship amidst the end of the world. The chemistry is good between the steady and protective Gerrard Butler and his son, who Roman Griffin Davis (Jojo Rabbit) fills with a mix of fear and teenage angst.
Whilst the clichéd story covers all the usual bases, and its all too convenient ending falls a bit flat, Greenland 2 is a dependable survival movie with a good heart.
